Dear residents, families, and healthcare partners,
In our last letter, we shared with you that our attention has now turned to the anticipation of a surge of COVID-19 patients flooding Ohio’s health system and preparing for the reality that COVID-19 may likely enter our facilities (and all facilities in our state). As reported earlier this week, Dr. Amy Acton said that modeling is now showing that at the peak of confirmed cases in the state there may be as many as 10,000 new cases a day in Ohio.
As of today, we have no residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 within any of our three communities. However, the Governor’s office and our local hospital systems are informing us that it is no longer a matter of “if” they will come but rather a matter of “when” they will come to us. We are preparing now for that reality. It is with the sense of duty and responsibility for our residents and our staff that we have proactively taken the following approach.
We have developed several stages of contingency plans across our three communities to keep our non-COVID-19 resident population safe and separate while properly treating any COVID-19 positive patients that may come our way. Some of these plans include strategies like separate staff teams, dedicated and isolated units, development of proper infection control policies and procedures, and even the institution of negative pressure environments for positive patients. We have collaborated with University Hospitals and their doctors and resources to accomplish this goal.
This week all of our staff began donning masks per the direction of the Ohio Department of Health. The use of these masks is simply an additional precautionary measure to implement using similar principles behind the concept of social distancing.
We are very appreciative of the teamwork and collaboration happening to equip our caregivers and serve our residents. Our community working together with healthcare partners encourages us each and every day. By God’s grace we will get through this together. With His help we strive to uphold our mission statement: We are called to serve those entrusted to us.
