FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where Do I Begin?

There’s something beautiful about the thought of aging gracefully. However, if we are honest, as the years progress and we witness our loved one struggling to tie their shoes, take a shower, or keep a clean house, we recognize that with aging comes inevitable loss. The decline of functionality in any area, but especially in the basic activities of daily living are often frustrating and scary for the loved one, and disconcerting for the family.

Sometimes, after a life-changing health event like a fall, stroke, or accident, the need to make a change is immediate and obvious. Other times, it requires evaluating your loved one’s ability to care for themselves as well as assessing their safety and quality of life.

When should I start the conversation?

Talking about what to do when your loved one can no longer care for themselves is not easy.

It is possible, and perhaps ideal, to have these conversations early and thoughtfully while your loved one is not yet in need of supplemental care. Conversations at this time might include discussions about how they would like to be cared for when they need additional help, ongoing health concerns and how they should be managed, their thoughts on long-term care, as well as wills and financial planning. Having a plan in place will be extremely beneficial to both you and your loved one when the time comes to make decisions.

All too often, however, the conversations we wish we would have had—for one reason or another—haven’t taken place. Whether your loved one is facing a sudden life change due to an accident, fall, or other major health event, or you sense that their ability to care for themselves is in question, our team can help you navigate this difficult territory.
